Control where you need it, help where you don't
- Ease of use throughout the interface, like a normal website. Links behave like links; open multiple tabs at once; download and upload as you'd expect.
- Security as standard: robust hosting, 2FA authentication without being annoying, rolling backups, fully hosted on world-class Salesforce and AWS infrastructure.
- Rolling upgrades, often daily, though you wouldn't know it: zero down time and a stable interface.
- Timesaving: Consonance shortens the time it takes to do multiple administrative publishing tasks such as P&Ls for acquisition, briefings for the internal acquisition process and for freelancers and team handovers, spreadsheet downloads and more.
- Monitor ONIX feeds, reports, review the audit trail, look up when data went to a recipient and see the proof.
- Quickly identify data issues and quality improvement opportunities, including missing prices, unusual measurements, missing images and nearly 1000 other elements.
- Fundamentally correct data model means no "synching" (read: brittle opportunity for things to break) is necessary between linked editions: works hold work-level information, and products inherit from the work, whilst holding their own product-level information and any overrides.
- One version of truth is not just in metadata: contacts, production, contracts information and every page in Consonance is properly modelled so your data is correctly stored – once.
- Scalable: our largest client has tens of millions of records flowing annually between Consonance and its recipients.
- Responsive helpdesk staff who actually write code and make roadmap decisions.
Configurable marketing materials and guides
- Make season, series, calendar event, author, translator, institution or series editor-specific catalogues, flyers, guides and information sheets with Consonance's flexible marketing materials templating capability.
- Include sample figures, diagrams and graphs, internal layouts, spreads, packshots, pricing, your in-house subject categorisations, and illustrators and translators.
- Export to InDesign or, more practically, generate complete materials directly within the system to your own design and data element specifications.

Full metadata support for complex publication plans
- Repurpose content to form new editions, teacher's packs, classroom sets, teacher and lecturer guides using built in metadata management tools designed to shorten the amount of time spent on admin tasks such as 1-click duplication of works or products.
- When you upload an ebook, Consonance can automatically extract its richly linked table of contents to use in marketing materials, ONIX and spreadsheet exports.
- Track competitor and related titles, and adoptions by organisation.
- We support the latest BISAC, and Thema subject codes, and keep them up to date so your metadata quality does not decay. We still maintain BIC in the system for your legacy requirements.
We provide extensive Editeur-supplied guidance on the use of Thema codes, making it easier to work effectively with the new standard by distinguishing between academic and professional codes, and codes intended for general interest.
We also support the Dutch Uniform Subject Classification (NUR) codes, and are able to add further national code systems on request. You can have unlimited in-house subject codes.
Reporting
- In Consonance you can search by any field, and report the results by any field.
- One small example: search for products contributed to by a particular translator, and export a list of rights deals associated with those products, and a PDF rights guide.
- As well as exports, you can do all sorts of things with the results of a search: group, refine, edit, or otherwise act upon the results – even use the results of the search as the starting point for another search. It is a phenomenal feature.
- There are groupings in the system that you can use in searches, too – ad hoc ones that you make yourself, or ones derived from other data such as seasons, work types, marketing tier, project stage, series membership, sales dates, contract settings, rights, production status and more.
CRM tools
- Consonance features multiple tools to enable you to send and track complimentary inspection copies, and copies for review.
- Tracked copies, issue management, to-dos, and discussions all allow you to track and understand the effectiveness of your copies being sent to teachers, to groups and institutions and for particular events.
- Geographical locations, places of interest and thematically relevant information allow you to prioritise sending copies to the places where there will be the most interest.
- Tags on contact profiles allow you to build up a per-person and per-organisation picture of who is interested in what. This data is fully reportable and analyseable, and you can click through on tags to see other contacts who are interested in the same thing.
- Far more than just contact information, Consonance stores files, relationships, affiliations, locations and languages, and free text so you can make notes to ensure you have a full picture of your customers' preferences – with GDPR compliance.
- Industry standard identifiers such as ISNI, ORCID and D&B
- Import and export tools so you can centralise all your organisational data without having to manually input it. One version of the truth – not just for metadata.
Pricing
While traditional trade publishers will often specify consumer RRP pricing in multiple currencies, scholarly and professional publishers more frequently need to specify pricing for a wider range of customers.
Consonance comes with full support for the wide range of price types and qualifiers available in ONIX, across arbitrary lists of currencies.
It is not unusual for a client to specify combinations such as:
- GBP inc-tax consumer RRP
- GBP inc-tax library RRP
- GBP inc-tax member/subscriber RRP
- USD exc-tax consumer RRP
- USD exc-tax library RRP
- EUR exc-tax consumer RRP
- NZD exc-tax consumer RRP
- AUD exc-tax consumer RRP
- CAD exc-tax consumer RRP
For GBP pricing you choose to specify prices either exc- or inc-tax, and we convert them on export.
For EUR pricing you choose to specify prices either exc-tax, or inc-tax for a chosen national tax regime, and we convert them on export to add or remove taxes for any other Euro area tax regime.
These prices are all available for dissemination through ONIX, spreadsheets, our API, into PDFs as customised marketing materials, or through XML feeds to catalogue workflows.
We work with you to define which prices you want to specify, and configure your account to make it as straightforward as possible.
